Biography
My name is Chris Medeiros and I was born in 1987 in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. I started carving in early 2007 more as a hobby which later progressed into me displaying my art.
In early 2006 I became real fascinated in the area of Inuit Art. Throughout my journey I met a few local artists. One known to many as “Stoneboy” Bart Lavalle, an aboriginal artist who specializes in making soapstone sculptures and who is famous for his bears.
I had purchased a few sculptures from Bart as gifts and later started collecting his art. I watched Bart carve frequently and was amazed at how quickly he could turn a raw piece of soapstone into a beautiful lifelike creature with just a few simple hand tools. I began to learn much about the Inuit culture and their art through him.
Bart was taught by master Inuit carver George Arlook, who I also got to meet.
All of my sculptures are made by hand using files and rasps. I then use a candle wax method to polish my carvings.
I believe my art to be a “work in progress” as it continues to mature rapidly. Inuit style was just a platform basically for me.
